How to Travel For Cheap: Part II

HOW TO TRAVEL FOR CHEAP: PART II

1. If you are traveling in a big group, consider staying at a house or apartment instead of staying in a hotel and getting multiple rooms. You can see many listings of apartments on AirBnB (go to 'Home Type' and choose 'Entire Place' if you want to have a place to yourselves). The cost is often much lower per person this way, and you get more privacy as well.

2. Don't just book the first hotel or flight you like. Look for hotels and flights on websites that compare all the available prices and show you comparisons. For flights you can use Skyscanner to see the cheapest flights for the route and date you want. If you want to stay at a hotel, you can use Hotels-Scanner to look for hotels across different websites. This way you can see more hotels, and also see which website offers the best deal for each hotel.

3. Use car booking apps in the countries you visit, instead of taking normal taxis or 3-wheelers. The booking applications usually offer cheaper prices, and the vehicles are registered onto a database and tracks your trip so it is also safer.

Uber is probably one of the most popular booking applications, operating around the world (Sri Lanka, India, Australia, U.A.E, U.K, and U.S to name a few).

Grab is a car booking app in South-East Asia (Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Myanmar).

Some other notable ones are PickMe in Sri Lanka, and Ola in India.

4. Exchange just the bare minimum amount of money needed at the airport. Airports usually have the worst exchange rates as they know that many people will exchange money there just because it is convenient. You can exchange money at better rates in the city later.

5. If you are interested in certain activities, look online and try to find coupons for it (for example, Fave has coupons you can use in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore). Just search for things you wanted to do anyway, because of course if you buy unnecessary things just because there is a coupon for it, this plan backfires.
