LESSONS FROM THE OFFICE (MICHAEL GARY SCOTT)

Lessons From The Office (as told by Michael Scott)

Let's dive right in because there's a lot to learn from Michael Gary Scott a.k.a world's best boss.

  • Try. If you don’t try, you will fail for sure. This seems quite obvious, but so many of us shy away from ever making an effort because we are so afraid of failure or rejection. Failure and rejection are an inevitable part of life and you are guaranteed to experience it in some way or the other at some point in your life. So you need to get comfortable with that and simply think of each attempt as practice or as an experience in itself. So apply for that job. Ask for a promotion. Try out a new side hustle. Don't tie your self-worth to external factors and you'll be fine no matter what the outcome is.
  • Recognize your own flaws and weaknesses, and then work on them. For example if you have a bakery and the evaluation of your business helps you recognize that your icing skills are poor, you know to either practice till you get better at it, make cakes without icing, or buy icing from someone else. Knowing what you can and can't do (yet) means that you can plan more strategically to capitalize on your strengths, and work on either improving or working around the things you struggle with. And hey, if this exercise in critical evaluation gets you feeling a little low, follow it up with a list of your strengths. And either way, atleast your flaws don't involve hitting your co-worker with your car (I hope) so that's a win!

  • There are some things that you only learn with experience, so stop procrastinating and just get started. It would be great if we could just read online or listen to what people say, and automatically be spared all the growing pains and the hard bits of life. But while they can help, there are certain things that come with experience, which is why many offices look at your work experience instead of just your educational background when hiring you. So while you should certainly plan ahead, don't wait around forever. Sometimes you just need to get started and figure it out along the way.

  • Prioritize. At any given time, there's usually a lot going on. School, work, family, and these days everything that comes with a pandemic. There is so much to do and it's not always possible to do it everything. So you need to rank them in terms of importance or urgency and then allocate your resources - time or money or energy, accordingly. And sometimes new things will come up, so you just have to re-evaluate regularly to make sure you have got your priorities straight.

  • Take care of yourself. While it's great to focus on all your responsibilities, also make sure you are focusing on yourself and giving yourself the time you need to just de-stress and relax.

  • And of course, never give up.
